Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT ARE COMMON EVENTS AND WHEN ARE THEY HELD?

We hold events every Tuesday during the semester, typically from 5:30 – 7:30pm, followed by dinner, usually at one of our sponsors. Our normal structure is weekly anime screenings where we watch 4 episodes of our chosen show, broken up with games and manga nights, movie screenings and more. We watch 2 shows, 1 movie, and hold roughly 2 games nights and various other events run by our senpai. More details are available on our Facebook, Instagram and,Discord

DO I HAVE TO BE A MEMBER TO PARTICIPATE?

You don't have to be a member to participate in most SMACK events, but it is highly encouraged to support the club. Events that do require being a member are the End of Semester Dinner (EoS), Camp, Ball and the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Additionally, you won't be able to access the sponsorship benefits without a membership. This includes cinema ticket raffles.

HOW DO I BECOME A MEMBER?

If you missed us on market day, no worries, you can sign up here. Membership costs are $5 if you sign up during Semester 1 and $3 in Semester 2. Membership is valid until February the following year. You do not have to be a UQ student or even currently studying to join. We welcome anyone from 16 years and up. If you think there is an error with the sign up page (eg. incorrect pricing) please let an exec know so we can get it fixed as soon as possible. Membership for 2025 is not yet open.

DOES SMACK HOLD ANY BIGGER EVENTS DURING THE YEAR?

Yes we do, and they’re a really good way to meet other members and just have some fun. Each semester we hold a Get To Know You Party and Welcome Picnic in the first week to welcome all the newbies and do games like anime music quiz and My Anime List (MAL) Trivia. After exam blocks we have our End of Semester Dinner, and we have events on weekends and during the holidays too, typically run by trusted members in the community and our Senpai. A beach trip in the summer, camp in the winter, convention pilgrimages, and other weekend events like gunpla/hobby workshops.

HOW ARE SCREENED SHOWS PICKED?

At the start of each semester our members put in show recommendations. The executives assemble a shortlist, which members vote on at our Get To Know You Party. The top 4 shows have their first episode screened at our Battle Of The Pilots, and we have a final vote to decide which one we continue with, which is the first anime of the semester. Once we’ve watched that anime, each executive picks one and the members vote on that, the winner of which is the second anime of the semester. All movies are chosen by the exec team with no vote. We aim to pick shows that are appropriate to screen in front of a large audience and consist of 1 cour (typically about 12-13 episodes) with no cliffhangers and without a second season.

What are Senpai?

Senpai are our little helpers of the club. They help run tables at Get To Know You Party and other events. They’re a friendly face picked by their peers to help welcome new members into the club and make sure events can run smoothly, giving the execs an extra hand where needed. They are selected shortly before the start of each semester so make sure to keep an eye out on announcements for sign ups and make sure to introduce yourself!

Who is Sumako?

Sumako Yuukyuu is one of our adorable mascots. She writes the announcements, responds to DMs and controls the execs from the shadows, partnering with Uqqi to run the club. She is all powerful, all seeing and all knowing, hoarding the exclusive codes and tickets to our sponsors and events. Make sure to keep in touch as she may have some juicy deals for you. If she mentions anything about SMACK premium, run.

Uqqi is Sumako's equally cute plushie companion and sidekick. He works closely with our Discord moderators to keep you safe online, run discord events and assist with nagivating the discord.

What does ‘SMACK’ stand for?

SMACK stands for “Super Manga Anime Culture Kingdom. It helps us stand out from other clubs and has been since 2013. What would we be if we were not “SMACK”? UQAM? AMQ? SMACK certainly sounds better and has a punch to it (pun intended).
